Everything you need to know about the British Championships at The Northumbrian

The Northumbrian is hosting the British and English Middle Distance Triathlon Championships this June. Here is everything you need to know about entering, competing, and what to expect on the day

What is a championship?

Championship events are the highest level of competition in the country, attracting the most competitive age group athletes. Championships provide athletes with the opportunity to test themselves against a competitive field and race for British and/or national titles. Exclusive gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each Open and Female age category, alongside overall winners.

Am I eligible to enter?

Championships are open to athletes of all genders. Only Core or Ultimate level members of British Triathlon and the Home Nations are eligible for titles and prizes at championships. Other athletes may participate alongside in the same race, but they will not be eligible for titles and or prizes.

How do I enter?

Entries are open for the Northumbrian, enter the Half Iron distance to be in the championship. You will also need a Core or Ultimate membership to British Triathlon.

Titles and Prizes

Titles and prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed athletes in the Open and Female race categories in 5 year age groups.

Sustainability

The event organisers have worked hard to consider sustainability practices as part of the event. This includes:

  • Reducing single-use plastics on the course
  • Promoting sustainable travel by encouraging car sharing to the event
  • Implementing waste management like recycling on site and leaving no trace on site and the course
  • Sustainable wooden finisher’s medals, reusable kit bags for participants

What to expect on the day

  • All participants must check-in with the race organisers on site before the start of the race. Athlete registration will be open on the Saturday and Sunday. All participants must present their British Triathlon Membership Card or Race Pass at registration.
  • Participants will have your wetsuit checked at registration. All wetsuits MUST be dry when registering, if it is not, it will be dowsed in disinfectant to prevent contamination of Kielder Water.
  • All participants will be required to check-in at Transition on the Saturday or Sunday morning. This is an opportunity for athletes to rack their bikes and set out supplies and kit for the bike and run legs.
  • All athletes will be briefed on the day before the start of the race to ensure they have all the information they need to compete safely and fairly.
  • All athletes must comply with the rules of British Triathlon and the Championships.
  • Officials will be present for each leg of the race to ensure all rules are being adhered to and to ensure fairness for all athletes.
  • The course will also be covered by event marshals and medical officials. If you are in trouble at any point, please flag a marshal or stop at a feed station; both of these will have communication with Event Control. During the swim leg, a water safety team will be on the water until all participants complete the laps.
  • Feed stations will be available on the bike and run loops, providing nutrition from event partner Maurten. There will be a selection of items including Maurten products available on every aid station but athletes are responsible for their own nutrition.
  • Results will be available on the day, and an awards ceremony will celebrate the winners of the championship.

A digital race guide containing all the above information and details about kit, travel and accommodation will be emailed to all participants two weeks before the event. Email any questions in the meantime to info@eventsofthenorth.com
